The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 eliminated a long-time claiming strategy called "file and suspend." There was a phase in period which allowed for filing & suspending until April 30, 2016. Alternatively if you were born before 1950 you can still file and suspend.
You may still be able to file a restricted application if you were born before January 1st 1954 . This may allow you to claim spousal benefits without having to claim your own benefits, allowing you to earn additional delayed retirement credits (which Social Security calls 'deeming'). For people born AFTER January 1st 1954, once you claim spousal benefits, you have to also claim your own benefits.
